13 Jul 2009
The European Law Program of the China-EU School of Law (CESL) has already concluded its first academic year. The CESL in Beijing consists of an organising consortium of 13 European universities and the China University of Political Science and Law. Maastricht University is the only Dutch partner of this consortium. On July 2nd, 2009, students selected the "Best Instructor of European Law" for the year. Of the 35 received evaluation forms, 30 were completed according to instructions while 5 evaluations had to be discarded due to the selection of more than one instructor. The total survey recovery rate was 85.7%.
The results indicate that students favored Prof. Peter Van den Bossche from Maastricht University (Introduction to WTO Law) with 18 votes out of a possible 30. Prof. Van den Bossche has been named the "Best Instructor of European Law" for the 2008/09 academic year. On the evaluation forms, students had to list at least two reasons to justify their choices. Praise for Prof. Peter Van den Bossche included: (1) He has sound professional knowledge; (2) He motivates students to attend the class, and explains complex questions in simple terms; (3) His course is very well-designed and well-structured.
Prof. J.H.M Van Erp from Maastricht University (Property Law) ranked second with 6 votes. Praise for Prof. Van Erp included: (1) He is responsible, patient and careful; (2) His instruction is easy to understand, including clear explanations of important points and coherent thinking.
The feedback suggests that the instructors from Maastricht University and their modules were highly valued by students. Student evaluations are only one of many measures necessary for evaluating professors. The aim of the evaluation was simply to collect a valuable reference point for teaching work.
