Northwest Agriculture&Forestry University (NWAFU) is a national key comprehensive university directly under the Chinese Ministry of Education, and is one of the universities that enter into Project 211 (Project 211 is the Chinese government's new endeavor aimed at strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areasas a national priority for the 21st century) and Project 985 (in 1998, former president Jiang Zemin announced the goal of building world-leading universities in China. Subsequently, several top universities received special three-year grants for qualify improvement under what is called the 985 Project). The university dates from the National Northwest Junior College of Agriculture and Forestry establushed in 1934, initiated by Mr. Yu Youren, a senior official of the Kuomintang Party, and Genral Yang Hucheng, a well-known patriot.

There are more than 4,600 faculty and staff at NWAFU, including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering, 6 part-time academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering, 68 national, ministerial or provincial outstanding experts, 1,210 professors and associate professors, 172 supervisors for Ph.D., 501 supervisors for master students. The students enrollment amounts to over 20,000. The university is strong in such fields as dryland farming, water-saving irrigation, wheat breeding, biotechnology, and comprehensive management of soil and water erosion in the Loess Plateau. And there are great achievements have been done such as wheat breeding, cloning goat from adult somatic cellm research on human ES cells of embryo. At present, the university has set up cooperative relations with universities and research institutes over 40 countries and regions. Until now, the international students are coming from America, German, France, Japan, Austria, etc.
Programs for International Students
The university has 17 colleges (departments) covering agriculture, science, engineering, economics, management, liberal arts, and law, with 59 disciplines offering 4-year programs. And the university offers 78 master's degree programs, 50 doctoral degree programs and has 8 mobile post-doctoral research stations.
