Lanzhou University, located in Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu Province, was founded in 1909. It was recognized as one of the key comprehensive universities directly administrated by China's Ministry of Education in 1953. In 1996, it was listed as one of the top 100 key universities which would be strongly supported by the Ministry of Education and the local provincial government. It has 11 disciplines, including liberal arts, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and arts, etc.
So far, Lanzhou University consists of 30 schools and has 5,587 staff members, among whom there are 1610 faculty members, including 5 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The registered students of all categories are 51, 153, in which there are 19,756 undergraduates and 6,921 graduate students. Now it has 5 disciplines offering Doctoral and Master's Degree, 56 doctoral programs, 138 master programs and 76 bachelor programs. The University has made great achievements in the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, geography, northwestern ethnic minorities, regional economy, arid ecology, etc.
Programs for International Students
Lanzhou University is active in developing international academic exchange and cooperation with universities and institutions of many countries. It is the host institute for Chinese Government Scholarship students. Currently students from over 20 countries are studying on campus. In 2002, the school of International Cultural Exchange was established as a special institute for the enrollment, teaching and administration of international students, which also serves as the authorized testing center for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) and the Test of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL). Any students with the intention of learning Chinese may find Lanzhou University a worthwhile place in which they will be provided with ample opportunities to explore the wonderful realm of Chinese language and experience the miracle of the west of China.
